Back To School - The School Bus Blues
Nothing is worse than to watch your kids climbing on the school bus on the first day of school. I watched my twin five year olds head off to first grade today, and the back to school blues struck me full force. What the heck am I going to do for fun now? I am used to having them screaming in my ear as I write. I am used to getting up from an article and grabbing a great big hug now and then. Now, only an empty bedroom full of toys remains.
Sitting here at my desk I hear myself telling them to be quiet so I can concentrate. Now, they are gone and I can not concentrate.
We never know how hard it is to not have the little stinkers around until they are off somewhere else. Somehow, sitting around the house in my boxers is not as fun as I thought it might be. Being able to fart without setting a bad example has lost its luster as well. I want my kids.
Fortunately, school will be out at 3 and everything will return to normal. The kids will go back to seeing how many times they can say “Daddy” in a ten minute time period, and right during an important deadline.
I think this time I will just revel in their attentions, deadline be damned. Some things are just more important.
Is that the school bus I hear?
